Katrina del Mar Gallery Show in Portugal

Otter, photo by Katrina del Mar

The Gallery Wrong Weather will showcase, from the 11th to the 30th of June, an exhibition of works by New York-based artist Katrina del Mar. The Gallery’s stated objective is to present exhibitions by renowned artists whose field of work concerns, directly or indirectly, the world and the language of fashion. This will be Katrina del Mar’s debut in Portugal. The exhibition explores the wide diversity of her work, taking a keen and current look at her very particular approach to the issues that interest her.

Wrong Weather, in a joint effort with Katrina del Mar, has developed for this exhibition a limited edition of a fashion piece, which, by force of the particular concept of the gallery space, crystallizes the underlying themes of the exhibition and the idea that The Gallery takes on the task and displays the will to promote grand exhibitions of contemporary art.

The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday, from 10:30 to 19:30 – open at lunchtime – at The Gallery in the Wrong Weather store, Avenida da Boavista, nº 754, Porto (near Casa da Música) from 11 June through 30 June. Entry is free.

Katrina del Mar is a New York-based photographer and cinematographer, having directed her debut movie, Gang Girls, in 2000. Entirely shot in Super 8mm, she received a 4 and a half stars (out of 5) rating from Film Threat Magazine. Her work has been compared to Kenneth Anger’s, and she was attributed a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Her 2006 movie, Surf Gang, won the Best Experimental Movie award from the Sundance Film Festival’s PlanetOut Short Movie Awards.

From 2006 to 2008, Katrina del Mar was studio manager for acclaimed artist Nan Goldin, who described Katrina’s work as “radical” and “cutting edge”. Katrina coordinated and aided the development of Goldin’s new version of her “Ballad of sexual dependency”, for the Museum of Modern Art of New York.

Her new movie project, Hell on Wheels, Gang Girls Forever, will be released soon.

Her clients include the likes of Sony Music, Island Records, Polygram, London Records, Time Out New York magazine, People Magazine and the New York Post. Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bordeaux, France, New York gallery Deitch Projects, the American Fine Arts Company, gallery Binz 39 in Switzerland, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, Performance Space 122 in New York, and at the University of Cardiff, Wales.

This curator of this exhibition is Rui Carvalho da Silva.
